Daou 2020 Discovery Cabernet Sauvignon (Paso Robles)
An incredibly affordable California cabernet
You may have heard great things about Daou wine. My first experience with the Discovery Cab was at a pizza place. It paired very well with the pizza, but stood up on its own.
This wine is affordable! I purchased at around $20! What a steal! It is probably underrated, or undiscovered. Ironically, while there is no mention of the word "discovery" on the label, this wine is truly an amazing discovery for the price point!
This wine is immediately pleasant on the nose. I sense heavy smoke, oak, and leather, immersed in ripe red and dark fruit.
The notes from their website: "a rich and exuberant nose with an abundance of ripe cherry, black plum, and Zante currants, accompanied by undertones of blackberry jam and crushed wet gravel. Highlights of coffee and pencil shavings are rounded out with notes of dried desert sage and baking spices. This cabernet is robust and full bodied on the palate with flavors of black cherry, cassis, and wild boysenberry. Subtle secondary layers of cranberry and blueberry are framed with hints of vanilla, black olive and fine leather. Beautifully balanced and precisely structured around a core of ripe tannins, the velvety texture slowly fades with lingering flavors of blackberry, plum and cocoa."
While the wine has a massively impressive nose, and is certainly bold and fruity, I felt it may have lacked some tannins to balance the fruit. Overall it felt a little sweet for my taste. Nonetheless it is an amazing discovery!
